AST-120 (spherical carbon adsorbent)

AST-120, an oral adsorbent, has no systemic exposure and acts locally inside the GI tract to remove various toxins involved in the pathology of liver and gastrointestinal diseases. The result is a product with a well-established safety profile and a broad range of applications.

Preclinical studies show that AST-120 has a high and selective binding surface that adsorbs a number of substances putatively involved - directly or indirectly - in the pathogenesis of liver disease (e.g. ammonia) and gastrointestinal disease (e.g. serotonin, histamine, bile acids), while not binding digestive enzymes or fat-soluble vitamins involved in nutritional balance. Based on its pharmacodynamic properties, AST-120 has a potential to address a range of conditions, including Mild Hepatic Encephalopathy (MHE) in liver cirrhosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and pouchitis.

To date, AST-120 has demonstrated no interaction with concomitantly administered medications so long as it is administered ½ hr apart from other medications.
