Jeffrey D. Bornstein, M.D. joins Ocera Therapeutics, Inc. as SAN DIEGO, March 16, 2009 - Ocera Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the licensing, development and commercialization of proprietary compounds to treat a broad range of liver and gastrointestinal diseases announced today that Jeffrey D. Bornstein, M.D. has joined the company as Vice President, Clinical Development and Medical Affairs. Dr. Bornstein, a gastroenterologist whose clinical career focused on viral hepatitis and liver transplantation has made key contributions to the development of drugs for various gastrointestinal indications, including hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. “We are extremely pleased that Jeff has decided to join the team. His expertise in the industry as well as his background as a hepatologist will be invaluable to us as we expand our pipeline and development portfolio” said Scott Harris, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Ocera Therapeutics. Dr. Bornstein held clinical leadership positions at Maxim Pharmaceuticals, Elan Pharmaceuticals, and most recently was Vice President, Clinical Development at Tioga Pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining the biotechnology industry, he was on the faculty of Duke University, where he practiced as a liver transplant specialist and conducted clinical trials in patients with liver disease. “Patients with end stage liver disease are a population that has largely been underserved”, said Dr. Bornstein, “I am looking forward to working with the outstanding team already in place at Ocera to develop AST-120 and OCR002, two compounds with great potential to benefit these patients”.
