About Us
Overview
Ocera Therapeutics, Inc. is a San Diego based, privately held biopharmaceutical company founded in January 2005 by Dr. Eckard Weber and Dr. Laurent Fischer. Ocera focuses on the development of novel therapeutics in the areas of liver and gastrointestinal diseases.
Our portfolio consists of:
- OCR-002 - a novel ammonia scavenger in development for the treatment and prevention of hyperammonemia and resultant Acute Hepatic Encephalopathy (AHE) in patients with liver cirrhosis and Acute Liver Failure (ALF). OCR-002 is developed in both oral and IV formulations.
- AST-120 - a novel microspherical carbon adsorbent with selective adsorption profile for a variety of unwanted substances in the digestive tract. These substances may be responsible for a number of conditions, including Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pouchitis. They include ammonia, indoles (serotonin, octopamine), histamine, secondary bile acids, advanced glycation endproducts (AGE), and certain bacterial toxins. The compound was licensed from the Kureha Corporation (Japan) in 2005.
Ocera is funded by premier life sciences investors. Our team consists of highly experienced individuals with successful development and commercialization expertise.
